Tallahassee Community College is holding a news conference to announce a new scholarship created specifically for students who reside in the 32304 ZIP code. The event will be held today, Aug. 5, 2 p.m. at the TCC Fine & Performing Arts Center on the main campus.
The 32304 ZIP code runs from central Tallahassee into northwest Leon County and has more residents living in poverty compared to any other zip code in the Sunshine State, according to Florida Chamber of Commerce President Mark Wilson. There is no shortage of efforts and programs to try to help underprivileged people, but most are oriented toward individuals or families in crisis or focus on a single aspect of poverty such as food assistance, helping with childcare, housing or reducing crime.
TCC’s main campus resides in the 32304 ZIP code and the College has been working on a variety of fronts in the education arena to address this issue. This scholarship is another tool that can be used to help those who wish to move out of poverty.
TCC recognizes how poverty affects people from achieving their academic goals. The donated funds will provide students with scholarships to pursue an education.
Last May, the College received a total of $50,000 in gifts from Oliver/Sperry Renovation and Allen & Pam Nobles to create a scholarship fund for graduating seniors at Godby High School who are first-generation college students.
