Man in a truckDriving trucks is a profession that Joshua Rosbough said he had a passion for at an early age dating back to middle school.

When all my friends were going off to college, I knew truck driving was what I wanted to do,” Rosbough said. “Once I got through my first year of driving trucks, I began to develop my skills and opportunities opened up for me to do jobs in different types of freight. Eventually, I started my own trucking business.

Now, 22 years later Rosbough is still working in the truck driving industry. But he can now add instructor under his belt. Rosbough said he wants to teach people who enroll into the Commercial Vehicle Driving Career and Technical Certificate program at Tallahassee Community College become self-sufficient.

One of the things I really appreciate in this industry is it’s so diverse in terms of the types of freight involved and the pay revenue if you’re an owner operator as a company truck driver,” Rosbough said.

The average salary for someone starting in the truck driving industry is $36,000.

Once, they hit their first year they can seek other opportunities and bring that salary up,” Rosbough said. “We have company drivers in the industry who make six-figure salaries.”

Rosbough said truck driving provides independence. Every day is different and it’s a great career for a person who doesn’t want a boss hovering over them. “If you stick to the training that you developed the industry allows you the freedom to do your job,” he said.
